I qualified as a Speech and Language therapist and practiced throughout the Health and Education sectors. My PhD was in Health Psychology, designing and validating an outcome measure and therapy planning tool for children and young people with communication needs. My subsequent experience includes teaching and leading teams in Higher Education across a variety of areas in Health and Social Care.
Appointed as head of the School of Health Sciences and Social Work in March 2016 I provide leadership and management with the aim of maintaining and developing a high quality educational experience for all our students. This includes research informed teaching and in this role I continue to carry out and publish work across our curricular areas. I am also the Lead for the Department of Health funded Research Design Service South Central, a service providing researchers in Health and Social Care with support in developing competitive grant applications.
My primary research interests are in children and young people’s communication needs and I am currently continuing to work on further validation of a Quality of Life measure for this group. In addition, I also collaborate on studies evaluating interventions for children with speech and language needs. Other areas I also work on include feasibility studies in Speech and Language Therapy with older people and physiotherapy for people with multiple sclerosis. Ongoing interests are research methodologies and their combined application to health and social care needs and experiences.
