Biography

After graduating with a Biology BSc (Hons) degree from Liverpool John Moores University in 1995,.I enrolled on a PhD degree at University of Warwick and was subsequently awarded PhD in 1998 in Environmental Microbiology. I worked as a Postdoctoral Research fellow from 1999-2005 at the Center of Marine Biotechnology, University of Maryland with Prof Kevin Sowers. From 2005-2010 I was employed as an Assistant Professor at Towson University, USA and started working at the University of Portsmouth in 2010 as a Senior Lecturer and became Reader in Environmental Microbiology in 2015.

Research projects

Research focus includes the application of molecular tools to better understand microbial interactions and communities in the environment. This includes diversity and function of microbes associated with the GI tracts of wood eating organisms, detection of antimicrobial resistance in sediments and microbial diversity and function in inter-tidal sponges.
