Matthew Weait is Professor of Law and Society and Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Portsmouth. He was formerly Professor of Law and Policy and Pro-Vice-Master at Birkbeck, University of London, and has held academic posts at the University of Oxford, Keele University and the Open University. Matthew’s research centres on the impact of law and legal systems on HIV prevention and on people living with HIV and AIDS, with a focus on human rights, and on criminal law and criminal justice processes. He has published widely in these areas, and has worked with a number of national, regional and international organisations and initiatives, including the National AIDS Trust, UNAIDS, and the World Health Organisation. He has been a member of the Expert Advisory Group on AIDS (UK Department of Health), and the Technical Advisory Group for the Global Commission on HIV and the Law (UNDP), and is an Expert Advisor to the European AIDS Treatment Group. Recently, he has been involved with the development of, and created materials for, the Law Enforcement and HIV Network.
